16/12/2021 – Lecture ‘The microbiome and next generation sequencing: first diagnostic one-stop shop in personalised microbiology?’

Guest speaker: Professor John Rossen, Department of Medical Microbiology and Infection Prevention, University Medical Center Groningen, University of Groningen, The Netherlands and Department of Pathology, University of Utah School of Medicine, United States of America

Organiser: Department of Diagnostic Sciences

The microbiome (the pool of genetic material of microbiota) is analysed with next generation sequencing (NGS) to characterize the spectrum of microorganisms present. This spectrum is associated with health and disease. However, the importance for the individual patient and opportunities for therapeutic intervention largely remain to be defined.
