17/12/2020 - Lecture 'Hyperacusis: psycho-audiological assessment and management'

Guest speaker: Dr. Hashir Aazh (The Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust)

Organiser: Department of Rehabilitation Sciences

Hyperacusis, i.e. the experience of inordinate loudness of sound that most people tolerate, and tinnitus, often occur together. Both symptoms can impact an individual’s daily functioning, leading to a reduced quality of life.

In clinic, hyperacusis can be evaluated using questionnaires, and by determining the uncomfortable loudness levels. However, uniform diagnostic criteria for hyperacusis are lacking. Further, there are several treatment strategies for patients with tinnitus and/or hyperacusis, among which are counselling-based therapies focusing on habituation and cognitive behavior. However, the management of hyperacusis using cognitive behavioral therapy in patients with hyperacusis is challenging.

Dr. Aazh Hashir is specialized in the assessment and management of tinnitus and hyperacusis; the latter being the topic of the lecture.
